I made a way for myself in the world against incredible odds and I was not in the habit of depending on anyone for anything. I hustled my way through life and created lanes where there were none. But there was always just one thing missing—one big thing— family. I was born into a broken family, to a mother who could never be one and a father who was busy starting new families everywhere he decided to call home. My mother was a shell and my father was a ghost. And I was their daughter. As I got older and people started moving away, there were no aunts or uncles, no grandparents, no cousins—there were no connections.

He exclaimed as he rose from the chair, his haircut complete. “I almost forgot about that! Man, do you know how hard it is to get Wite-Out off your nails? ” I laughed so hard, my stomach ached, and I tried to issue a sincere apology through my cackle.  .  . ” Aeron reached into his pocket, pulled out a bottle of nasal spray, and squirted it into one nostril and then the next.
